Terrorist
attacks rising in Pakistan: US State Dept report
Source: NewKerala.com
Washington, May 1: Terrorist attacks against noncombatants have
more than doubled in Pakistan from 2006 to 2007, while deaths from
such attAcks have quadrupled to 1,335 fatalities, according to a
report released by the US State Department.
The new statistics showed that terrorist strikes against nonmilitary
targets worldwide remained virtually unchanged in 2007 from 2006,
at roughly 14,500 attacks, but the number of deaths from those attacks
increased to 22,685 from 20,872, according to statistics compiled
by the National Counterterrorism Center.
''Its a fair statement that around the globe, people are
getting increasingly efficient at killing other people,'' Russ Travers,
deputy director of the counterterrorism center, told reporters.
Terrorist
acts in India probably intended to incite Hindus, Muslim
Source: NewKerala.com
Washington, May 1: The attacks, which killed and injured both Muslims
and Hindus in India last year, were probably conducted by extremists
hoping to incite anger between the Hindu and Muslim communities,
according to the US State Department.
The Departments annual report on terrorism, released here
yesterday notes, Indian officials claim that the perpetrators of
these attacks have links to groups based in Pakistan and Bangladesh,
particularly Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, and Harkat-ul-Jihad
Islami, among others.
These groups are also involved in terrorist activity in Jammu and
Kashmir.
Al-Qaeda
Focuses on Musharraf and Pakistan
Bloomberg
Al-Qaeda and Taliban forces based in Pakistan are reducing raids
into neighboring Afghanistan as they focus instead on attacking
President Pervez Musharraf's government, a US commander said. "Insurgents
have declared war against the government of Pakistan'' and are taking
advantage of the political turmoil there, Major General David Rodriguez,
the commander of US forces in Afghanistan, told reporters at the
Pentagon yesterday. Rodriguez described al-Qaeda as an "opportunistic
enemy'' that will "go where it can get the biggest game and
the best effect of their operations.'' Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin
Laden, in an audio message released in September, called on Pakistanis
to rebel against Musharraf to avenge an army assault on a pro-Taliban
mosque in the capital, Islamabad. More than 800 people have been
killed in suicide bombings and other attacks in Pakistan since the
July raid on the Red Mosque...Briefing reporters, Rodriguez was
asked whether cross- border raids into Afghanistan had dropped because
insurgents are remaining in Pakistan to fight the government...His
comments echo those of Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who said
last month the number of fighters crossing the border is down about
40 percent because "al-Qaeda right now seems to have turned
its face toward Pakistan.''...US intelligence officials say that
al-Qaeda has established a haven in Pakistan's tribal regions. More
than 80 percent of suicide bombers staging attacks in Afghanistan
are trained, recruited or sheltered in Pakistan, the United Nations
said in a report published last year.

New Kerala (IN)
Forty militants have been killed and 30 captured in fighting between
militants and security forces in Pakistan's South Waziristan region,
a military spokesman has said. Eight soldiers have been killed and
32 others wounded in raids on militant hideouts backed by artillery
and helicopters, a military statement said. Earlier troops had hit
militant positions with artillery fire. South and North Waziristan,
adjoining the Afghan border, are strongholds of militants allied
to the Taliban. The BBC quoted the military as saying that the militants
had been killed in a series of raids on Wednesday and early on Thursday.
Thirty militants had been arrested from a number of hideouts near
the Afghan border during the raids, the statement said...There are
reports of people moving out of the area and walking for miles to
reach secure zones...Earlier, security forces have carried out operations
in Spinkai Raghzai, Nawazkot, Tiarza and its surrounding areas,
where all militants have been reportedly cleared out of these areas.
